Human Abuse

This Barn Owl was illegally removed from its nest as a chick. Through selfish ignorance and drastic malnutrition, its bones were so weak that it could not even stand on its own two legs! You will notice that the feathers were so deformed they look like broken quills. The condition of this bird was irreversible, and we were forced to euthenase it. This Barn Owl was poisoned at a timber mill in Kuils River. We managed to save its life, and it has already been released.

A very sad case of human abuse! This Yellowbilled Kite was raised in captivity, which we could tell from the stress and hunger traces on its feathers (white malnutrition lines, which are also weak points). As if that weren’t enough, his ‘parents’ also decided to both clip and pinion (cut off the last wing digit - the equivalent of cutting our hand off at the wrist) his wings, leaving him to bleed. His under-feathers hae been burned and, judging from the poor condition if his feet, he was doomed to a life of scrounging on the ground for scraps of food. This Spotted Eagle Owl was raised as a pet, with its wings clipped to prevent escape. Its owners soon realized that an owl, with its powerful feet and sharp talons, doesn’t make an easy pet! Fortunately feathers grow back, but unfortunately, this owl is now ‘human imprinted’ and therefore non-releasable.
