EAGLE ENCOUNTERS’ core function is the rehabilitation of birds of prey. We receive birds that have been injured; poisoned or confiscated – our primary objective in every case being to release healthy; fit; successfully hunting and able-breeding raptors back into the wild. Considering that, of all the birds received to date: 30% have already been released; 35% are still in the rehabilitation-for-release process; 15% have proved non-releasable and there has been a 20% mortality rate, we proudly boast an extremely successful 65% overall release rate. (Statistics subject to constant change)
Due to injury severity, human intervention or the incorrect handling of a bird prior to admission, we are forced to declare some raptors ‘non-releasable’. At Eagle Encounters, these birds are given a new lease on life by becoming ambassadors for the preservation of their species, through our various community outreach and awareness programmes.
Experience has taught us that rehabilitation without awareness is fruitless. Our children deserve to inherit the gift of a balanced eco-system; an environment that is teeming with vital, self-sustainable life! Whilst education provides the building blocks that promote awareness and direction, interaction forms the corner stones between a passive understanding and an active will to conserve. The creation of an interactive experience between people and our birds has led to the development of unique relationships, and a newfound appreciation for the crucial role that raptors play in sustaining a balanced eco-system.
